Jesus for President

I know I'm not suppose to get involved with politics.  You don't have to worry about this becoming a political blog. I like politics about as much as standing in line at the DMV, it's time consuming and boring but necessary.  Politics is necessary because the process decides who get the keys to the country.  My vote will help determine who sits in the drivers seat.  Because of this I need to be informed.  I was really impressed with the information given at Saddleback's Civil Forum.  You can watch it here and I encourage you to do so.  As far as my involvement, I'm going to continue to be involved with the Kingdom of God and I might write in Jesus for President.

I also encourage you to watch the conventions.  Tonight, Obama is going to give a speech to 80,000 people at Mile High Stadium.  Thank God for DVR because I'm going to record it and watch the kickoff to college football season.  Go, Wolfpack!  I would write Jay Hardwick in for president but he is one of those obnoxious Gamecock fans. 

Sharing Your Faith Starts Here

The Crazy Ones Challenge the Process

I'm going to date myself. Way back in '01 I attended a conference called, "Catalyst."  If you've never been, you need to put it on your life list because it is an amazing experience.  One of my takeaways was the 5 Practices of a Leader session lead by Andy Stanley.  Andy dissected a book by, James M. Kouzes entitled, The Leadership Challenge: How to get extraordinary thing done in organizations.  The five practices are...

• Challenge the process
• Inspire a shared vision
• Enable others to act
• Model the way
• Encourage the heart

Watching the following video on Tim Stevens blog really fired me up about challenging processes.  I was reminded that the crazy ones challenge the process.  They recognize that you're either growing or dying.  They ask, "why" about everything.  Those crazy ones hate the status quo.  They embrace change as necessary.  They take people where they have never gone before.  Those crazy ones need to be reminded it's not pride but the way God wired leaders.  When was the last time someone called you crazy?

Money, Money, Money

I've gotten several requests for resources on tithing.  Yes, I blogged it, the T word.  Tithing should be a part of your ministries DNA just like purity, or prayer.  You cannot disconnect faith and finances.  If it is not in the rhythm of your teaching I encourage you to strike the down beat.  I know there are hundreds of resources out there but I'm going to list a few that will get you started.   

• The Bible - Seriously, just teach it.  The saying of Jesus would be a great start.  Jesus talks about possessions 15 times more than heaven. 
• LO$T Message Kit - Another creative resource from Northpoint Ministries.  Andy Stanley is a genius at taking the Bible and disarming people.  You could start this series in conjunction with the fall series of TV Lost. 
• Maximum Generosity - Old school, traditional but incredible information and statistics. 
• Sermon Spice - Short videos that visual communicate the biblical principles.  Type tithing in the search engine. 
• Gerald Gillespie - A friend that heads up our Crown Ministry here at Mud Creek.  Gerald is a great resource and is networked to give advice and support.

Things are Right in the World

Things are right in the world of basketball.  Dr. Naismith can turn back over in his grave because basketball gold is back in the USA.  Naismith, the inventor of one of the greatest games ever played, has been on his stomach since Argentina took the gold medal in the Olympics four summers ago.  I'm a fan of the game, so much that I got up at 2:30am to watch the victory.  The Olympics have been amazing and Cheryl and I have enjoyed watching them.  Diving, not so much, the US didn't do very well.  Maybe, every US community took down the high dive like they did at our public pool.  I've heard rumors that Chuck Norris has started an initiative to restore high dives to public pools and he is going to dive for the US in '12.  Gold?

In The Trenches

Last night I was invited to speak at a back to school youth rally.  My friend and a former student Jeremy Beauford gave me this opportunity.  He and his wife Holly are serving in downtown Gvegas at Calvary First Baptist.  Under Jeremy's leadership the church has converted a store front and named it "The Barracks."  It has a cool military vibe and the kids seem to really like it.  Jeremy has a passion for youth far from God and is truly serving in the trenches.

I drove myself because Cheryl, my regular driver, was attending a "girls" night.  I didn't mind because I needed the time to study.  If you saw a gray Tacoma swerving down Hwy. 25, it was me looking at my notes.   The elements of the evening were the normal youth stuff: pizza, youth workers that are pretty much adults that got kicked out of adult Sunday School, 70 to 80 kids made up of churched and unchurched, loud music and the message.  God took a guy serving in the trenches and all of those elements and changed seven youth's eternity.  I loved it!  Jeremy, the army of God needs more guys like you.  Do you know anybody serving in the trenches?  Get in touch with them this week and let them know how incredible they are.
