- Have you ever asked the wrong question?

Three Simple Questions

1.  Location Question:  Why would I (people) go there?

·         It’s more convenient

·         It’s a lot better experience

·         It feels more like me

2.  Leadership Question: Would I follow him or her.

Great vision with without people is irrelevant. – Good to Great

Tom Sawyer Leaders – He convinced his friends that painting a fence on Sat was fun.  Some actually paid him.  Tom Sawyer leaders…

·         They have to be visionary from the second chair. 

·         They have to have the vision of the house.

·         Resourceful leader is willing to do the job with little money

·         Inspirational leader.  Able to communicate well.  A campus pastor has to be a good communicator and a church planter has to be a gifted communicator.

·         Delegating leaders.  They get a bigger buzz out of watching others paint the fence. Seacoast doesn’t hire people to do ministry they hire people to equip people to do ministry.  Your leaders are in the house.   Elijah and the widow… he used what was in the house.

3.  Launch Question:  Is it necessary or is it just helpful?

·         Buildings are helpful but not necessary.

·         HD is helpful but not necessary.

·         Live video is helpful but not necessary.  Don't let helpful things keep you from doing necessary things.  Location, leadership and launch are all neccesary. 

What are the limiting factors to the vision?

According to Eph. 3:20-21 the only limits are those of vision

Jesus’ 7 Leadership Practices

Confidence – God has gifted them and given them for to you to accomplish His purpose.  We must demonstrate this confidence when praying and approaching potential leaders.

Connection – The disciples were Jesus’ friends.  We have to make equipping leaders highly relational.

Content – Jesus constantly gave them content.  Give leaders stuff to study that will stretch them.

Coaching – He coached them.  Walk along side leaders and encourage them to grow.

Challenge – Jesus would stretch their faith.  Help leaders set goals and dream.

Cluster Learning – Jesus got leaders together and let them learn from each other.  Gather leaders from the same demographic and let them talk.

Conference – Jesus took them to groups gathering to learn.  Host or go to training conferences with your leaders.

Mac takes this paradigm and strains leadership actions through it.  He discovered the best way to do this was through apprenticships and web based learning.  People can then go at their own pace in every place.

- Strategic Reaction – Our Multi-site journey

- Making memories and moments are important.  To accomplish a God given dream you don’t need to know all the X and Os but you’ve got to have a blast doing it.  Our goal is to create eternal memories for those not here yet. 

45 “Who touched me?” Jesus asked.  Everyone denied it, and Peter said, “Master, this whole crowd is pressing up against you.”  Luke 8:45

• This lady was not in the scene.  She was not on the disciple’s radar.  They were going to the house of a person of influence. This lady interrupts their plan.  This is a biblical picture of multi-site church. 
• Some of God’s greatest plans for us come as interruptions.  The best discoveries happen along the way.   Just love, just reach, just pray and God blesses.  Follow what is in your heart and it is amazing what God will bring into your life.       

2008 Multi-site Exposed Day 1 Top 10 Take Aways

I love processing possible plans on how to reach more people for Jesus. Top ten day one 2008 MSEC take aways...

1. Don't allow an outside force to be a limiting factor to engaging people with the gospel. God is bigger than a city planning board or the price of land.
2. Network with like-minded people who have pioneered a similar plan.
3. Leverage your organizations unique DNA and as you decentralize increase DNA protection.
4. Prayer is a foundational component and should be valued and practiced.
5. Your churches first community impact should be organic grass roots service projects not programmatic publicity driven kickoffs.
6. Coldstone ice cream and shrimp & grits at breaks help you process plans. Yum!
7. You must personally recruit and lay out vision to smaller team before moving to big testimony.
8. There are multiple ways to accomplish objective. Your plan is not the plan.
9. You cannot remove the element of faith from any vision.
10. Constantly check your heart and your guts.

2008 Multi-site Exposed Conference Day 1

What an indredible day!  There is no doubt that a great church can impact a city.  Charleston is a great city and God working through Seacoast Church contributes to the culture.  Cheryl and I have been here many times to relax and recharge but I have never been here to refocus.  That is what is happening in me right now.  I have been challenged beyond my imagination with new paradigms and by meeting new people.

This post includes some pictures and previous post include my notes from today's two main sessions.  I can't wait to share with you these ideas and insights.  There are five guys from our team that couldn't quit talking and dreaming tonight.

Multi-site Exposed Main Session #2

- I'm not here to prescribe but to describe what God is dong at National.

- Seeing God change lives is why we do what we do.

1 One day Jonathan said to his armor bearer, “Come on, let’s go over to where the Philistines have their outpost...” 2 Meanwhile, Saul and his 600 men were camped on the outskirts of Gibeah, around the pomegranate tree at Migron... 4 To reach the Philistine outpost, Jonathan had to go down between two rocky cliffs that were called Bozez and Seneh. 5 The cliff on the north was in front of Micmash, and the one on the south was in front of Geba. 6 “Let’s go across to the outpost of those pagans,” Jonathan said to his armor bearer. “Perhaps the Lord will help us, for nothing can hinder the Lord. He can win a battle whether he has many warriors or only a few!”  7 “Do what you think is best,” the armor bearer replied. “I’m with you completely, whatever you decide.” 1 Samuel 14:1-7

We can't have a "better safe than sorry" attitude when it comes to faith.

• Jonathan and his armor bearer... Jonathan says in vs 7 let's go and perhaps the Lord will be with us. Here is a guy that wasn't playing not to loose.
• Jonathan's plan was difficult and daring. We need the spirit of Jonathan.
• Jonathan screamed charge when he should have screamed retreat.
• Most church leaders operate with a reverse mindset. Let's stay put...we don't need more resources we need more guts.
• The will of God is not an insurance plan it is a daring plan.
• What can keep you at the bottom of the cliff?
• If you think you don't have enough leaders. God fills vacuums. Eph. 1:23

Saul is a contrast. He is sitting under trees. He should have been fighting back instead of kicking back.

• Church is not a spectator sport. Multi-site is a reminder of that.
• The people's prayer, God do you want me to serve there or serve more here?
• Create a survey culture. Survey and see if you can find some Jonathans.
• Why would we launch multi-site is the wrong question. Why would we not launch is the right question.
• Anything less than multiplication is laziness and bad stewardship.
• What is the next step? Pray, educate and survey.

Not everybody can be a Jonathan but everybody can be a armor bearer. Our churches are full of armor bearers that will step up if Jonathans lead.

Greg S - Couldn't build on site because of zoning. Seacoast has 13 campuses, 29 experiencing, 10,000 people on weekend without building big building.

Dino R - Healing Place Church. Built on serving community. One church in many location being a healing place for communities. 11 locations, 2 internationa, 7000 people.

Mark B - National Community Church started in school moved to movie theater in Union Station. Cast vision to start meeting in theaters and is doing it in three other theaters on the line. Three live services, 5 by HD video.

How can you be unique?

Greg S - What are you passionate about? This is an important question to ask.

Dino R - Gumbo approach to multi-site is important. Learn and meet needs.

Mark B - Everything is an experiment. If you think you've got it figured out you are heading in wrong direction.

What advice would you give to Sr. Pastor about starting multi-site?

Greg S - Get your people to go experience it. Grab some people and get in van and go see it.

Dino R - Nobody wants to die with the recipe. Ask a million question because people are willing to share.

How do you overcome traditional paradigm of one church one pastor?

Mark B - Not everybody needs to know me. If your thoughts are 100 percent sanctified tell me how.

Greg S - You are going to reach more people with multi-site than without.

James 2:14-20 Do You Have Real Faith?

• A lot of people see Bible but they don't get it.  I think I'm a Christian shouldn't be in our vocabulary.

• James states that real faith changes people. Real faith produces real works.

The Message Paraphrase gives a great paraphrase…

14-17Dear friends, do you think you'll get anywhere in this if you learn all the right words but never do anything? Does merely talking about faith indicate that a person really has it? For instance, you come upon an old friend dressed in rags and half-starved and say, "Good morning, friend! Be clothed in Christ! Be filled with the Holy Spirit!" and walk off without providing so much as a coat or a cup of soup—where does that get you? Isn't it obvious that God-talk without God-acts is outrageous nonsense? 18 I can already hear one of you agreeing by saying, "Sounds good. You take care of the faith department, I'll handle the works department." Not so fast. You can no more show me your works apart from your faith than I can show you my faith apart from my works. Faith and works, works and faith, fit together hand in glove. 19-20 Do I hear you professing to believe in the one and only God, but then observe you complacently sitting back as if you had done something wonderful? That's just great. Demons do that, but what good does it do them? Use your heads! Do you suppose for a minute that you can cut faith and works in two and not end up with a corpse on your hands?

James 2:14-20

• Not saying, to be saved you have to do something.  Is saying, if you are saved you will do something.

• Jesus illustrates that the one who knows me obeys me.

• Head knowledge is not enough.  The world doesn't understand head knowledge.
• If there is fire in the fireplace there will be smoke in the chimney.
• James illustrates the need.  He gives a situation where the group knows about a need but does nothing.  How we react to a need says a lot about our faith.
• We will get more emotional over TV drama than real life situations.
• Through your giving NC Baptist provided 600,000 meals after hurricane IKE.
• Even the Devil and Demons have head knowledge but they don't live for Him.

The clear Word is, real faith works!

Multi-site Exposed Conference

Imagine a group of people with the same Lord, vision and Pastor meeting in various locations.  Imagine different new campus across WNC all wired with Mud Creek’s DNA.  Imagine instead of spending millions to build new building these people used existing structures not used on Sundays to accomplish great things for God. 

I’m going to attend a conference this week that could turn imagination into vision.  It is the Multi-site Exposed Conference at Seacoast Church.  Me, Jared, Jimmy, Ryan and Greg Corn are going to be challenged over the next couple of days with some innovative ideas, pray for us. 

I found some notes taken from a webinar featuring Greg Surratt and Mark Batterson.  Read over these notes Download multisite_church_revolution.mht to get a context of what this conference is about.  I will also be posting and twittering through for your reading pleasure. 

Pray for Ryan Cumbo our media guy.  If he is away from his Mac and out of the Mud Creek media room all day, its rumored that if he is exposed to the sun for more than 86 seconds he starts to look like the PC guy on the Apple commercial. 

2008 Trunk & Treat 30sec Movie Ad

For Trunk & Treat to engage thousands of people with the gospel thousands of people need to know about the event.  This is where our Trunk & Treat marketing strategy comes in to play.  The two most effective elements of event marketing are relational and cultural. 

Relational marketing is our people telling their friends, family and strangers about the event.  The most effective publicity we do is relational.  Have you began praying and telling people about Trunk & Treat?

Cultural marketing is taking the information to where the people are.  We have discovered that advertising at our local movie theater is very culturally effective.  In a six week period most families go to the movies.  Ryan Cumbo, a good friend and Director of Media here at Mud Creek had 30 seconds to communicate the detail of this event and he hit it out of the park.  Watch the video and let me know what you think.
