0 Work On Project #1
Please post a link to your internet article, the answers to your Personal EKG and your assigned D-Team step in comments. You are required to reply to two other comments from classmates not on your D-Team.
Now that you have ventured into the structuring of youth ministry by laying a foundation and looking at some scriptural structure, let’s now tackle the endeavor of becoming students of the students.
Bone's personal EKG
1. I can help dispel the myths of youth ministry by endeavouring to do youth ministry in a Biblical manner.
2.Building Blocks 1-3 and 5 I would consider my strengths.
3. Building Block 7 would be a weakness. I seem to have trouble leading my youth workers to lead the youth toward ministering to others. The babysitting mentality seems to be prevailent.
4. Scriptural supports 1-4: strengths.
5. Scriptural support 5 I see as a weakness of mine. Leadership is something I always feel I fall short in.
6. One must be more involved personally with youth to help educate themselves to the youth culture around them. Experience is still the best teacher if one is willing to learn.
Bone's D-team assignment
Detail applications for the church today.
1. Churches must be willing to invest time, people, and resources into ministering to youth and children.
2. Churches and their leadership must make clear the expectations of a leader before they are placed in a position.
3. Plan for long-term youth ministry. Work toward establishing both workers and a ministry plan that will last!
4. Churches should obviously choose workers with a love for God and for people. You can't have one without the other or the ministry won't work.

Mark,
Just wanted to say how much I enjoy your class. My wife and I worked with youth and children for 7 years before I started pastoring. Even though I feel I'm doing what God wants me to, I miss youth ministry real bad sometimes! The class brings back a lot of great memories.

Chris,
I'm looking forward to us learning together. Please continue to pray for our class and I'm excited about what we can learn from your experience.

Guy's EKG
1. I would help to avoid youth ministry myths by doing my best to be the Godly leader the Lord has called me to be. In appendix B. the book does a great job with answering questions that I have had. Doug fields replied to this question stating that we must be leaders not teenagers.
2. Buidling Blocks 2 and 7 are my strengths right now. I do not have alot of experience in youth ministry so I would say I am grounded in God and I am energetic. Do not get me wrong my walk with the Lord is not what I would like it to be but the Lord is continuing to mold me.
3. Building Blocks 4-6 are my weaknesses.
4. To be completely honest with everyone the only scriptural support I am grounded in is the fellowship part. I am working on the other four but the Lord is molding me. I have had some experience with the other ones but I am only confident in fellowship
5. The other four scripture supports are my weaknesses.
6. I would continue to read articles concerning the youth of the world. I would listen to the youths interests asking them questions about it. Being around them is the best way for the first step in understanding there culture.
D Team discussion

Chris Guy,
I like your answer to number 6 of the EKG.
Posted by: Terry Moore | January 17, 2009 at 06:39 PM
1. I believe all the youth should be challenged in some ministerial way. They need to be focused and goal oriented. God did not build the church to sit around but to be actively involved reaching others. The youth are a vital part of the church and the church should be aware of this fact.
2. I feel my strenghts are 1,2,3
3.6,7 are probably my weaknesses
4. 3,4,5, as strengths
5.1,2 as weaknesses
6. to continually be involved and active in the youths' lives and be there to listen and encourage.

Matt's personal EKG
1. I can dispel the myths of youth ministry by a.)teaching them to live actively engaging their culture for Christ b.) Teach our youth they have power over temptations and sin through Christ c.) I can continue to love them and show them an authentic relationship and love for Jesus Christ in my life which will attract them to Jesus
2. I believe my strength is keeping building block one, keeping ministry Bible focused.
3. I am weak sometimes at building block 8, being intentional. I must make clear to them what we will do on certain nights.
4. Scriptural support 1 is my strength. Evangelism. God gave me a passion for this, and I want to teach and encourage our young people to be passionate about it.
5. Scriptural support 5, leadership is my weakness. I struggle sometimes taking charge. Pray for me, fear of man sometimes. The Lord is working on me here.
6. I can continue to educate myself to our youth culture by being authentic to our youth and being someone they can talk to. If I do that, they will eventually open up to me and let me know a lot of what's going on out there. Also read books, go to camp, have a teachable spirit.
Matt's D-Team assignment
1. How do I keep balance in what I am teaching the youth since we often focus on mainly what we're only familiar with?
2. What should I do and what should I avoid if I want the youth to accept me?
3. What are 3 ways to keep a new youth pastor once your church has hired him?

Heath’s EKG
1. If students/youth are the Church today, and I believe this is true, then to dispel the myths of youth ministry I believe we must teach them the importance of God’s Word long before they become a teen. The Bible gives us 3 periods of Jesus’ life. The Baby Jesus, the Ministry of Jesus, and that time His parents lost Him. If I remember correctly, this happened around the age 12. They found Him at the temple, where everyone was amazed at His wisdom and knowledge. At the age of 12 He had all the answers and the great thing is that He’s given them to us in His Word. It’s our job to give them to the children so they’ll have the answers when they need them, before their considered the youth.
2. Grounded in God
3. Recognize developmental uniqueness
4. Fellowship, Leadership
5. Ministry
Questions 2 – 5 were terribly difficult for me to answer. A lot of times others know you better than you know yourself. So, let me know if you agree, for those of you that know me.
6. The best way that I can see to educate myself with the current youth culture is to get involved and get to know the youth that make it up.
Step 2:
1. What are two important qualities a church should look for when choosing a youth minister?
Answer: Love God and Love People
2. Should you ever leave a ministry position when you are discouraged?
Answer: No
3. How many planed activities are considered doable and healthy for youth in a year?
Answer: 8 – 12 a year

1. I can help dispel the myths of youth ministry by trying to help bridge the gap between the youth and the older generations in the church. And show the church that the youth can play an active role in the church's future.
2. youth leaders are called to minister(strength)
3.recognize developemental uniqueness(weakness)
4.ministry(strength)
5.evangelism(weakness)
6.By trying to stay up to date with the things that they consider to be cool and interact with them in their lives.
D-team question #3
Plan to be there for the long haul.
Realize that youth can play a vital role in the success of a church.
To realize not all of the events have to be fun and games to be successful.
To be transparent with the youth because they can see right thru someone.
comments: I agree with you Heath we need to make sure that we are giving our children and youth the solid foundation that comes from the Word of God.
I agree with you also Matt. We can be more effective if we will show them how much our relationship with Christ means to us and live it in our culture and be real with them.

Bone's comment on Chris Guy's post:
I liked what you said about challenging youth to minister. It amazing how they can reach their peers if they will only try!
Posted by: Chris Rathbone | January 21, 2009 at 10:15 AM
Bone's comment on Heath's post:
The question about too many activities is one to consider. Sometimes I feel churches emphasize the activities over spiritual growth. A busy and fun youth group doesn't mean kids are growing spiritually.

i like kerry's long haul view. we should know that this will not and can not be an overnight fix.
i also wanna agree with heath on making sure that we give our youth a solid foundation on the word of God.

1. Intentionally find time to listen to God through prayer, Bible readings, daily devotions, and here staying on top of work and attending chapel. I feel in order for us to be seen as more than just babysitters or best friends we must be keyed in to where God is. That means in all we do we must be willing to stay fresh and focused on God and not our own personal gain.
2. 2&4
3. 7&5
4. 3&4
5. 1&5
6. Stay involved in the youth's lives.
D-Team #3
Be energetic. Energy spent towards God always shows in our lives and challenges others to look inside themselves and see what can energize them more than Jesus, and the answer is nothing.
Have a heart for God. If there is one thing men and women of Christ need in their lives it's a heart for God. No matter what the ministry. When God's at the heart of the matter, heart attacks by Satan don't seem so fatal.
Realize dreams that you have for the youth ministry, and capitalize on them by using your spiritual gift(s). There's never anything better than accomplishing dreams for ministry than realizing you did it with the certain abilities that God has gifted you with.
