2. A work environment should be where people feel comfortable in handling issues to be dealt with.
3. A work environment does give out signals concerning the inner you.
4. A work environment can be time saving or it can consume your time.

YMMT Principles of healthly youth ministry
I found the reading in the ymmt book very interesting, as it described the conditions of different youth ministry offices. "My office is not so orginized" you can hardly find room for a pencil.
(3). Principles for a healthly youth ministry
1. Create a work environment where you are effective and people feel comfortable.
2. Organize your office space for protective privacy.
3. Learn your church's office standards.
4.Organize, organize, organize!!!!!

1. Leader - A person who leads; a person who has commanding authority or INFLUENCE. Doug Fields gives great advice when he states, “If you find, develop, and empower leaders, you’ll be a valuable asset to your church and set yourself up for success in future youth ministry”. So, my question is, are you and I following this advice?
2. Leadership – the office of position of a leader. According to Doug Fields, it is a difficult but joyful task to develop a team of adult leaders who will love students and disciple them. Are you in the process of doing this in your youth ministry?
3. Team – A number of persons associated together in work or activity. Doug Fields explains that developing leaders for your TEAM is essential to building a healthy youth ministry. May I add, it is essential to building a healthy ministry PERIOD.
Below is a great guide for leaders who are training future leaders. It was taken from iEQUIP.org Leadership Questions & Answers
How do I choose people to train?
When selection leaders to train, we suggest you form some criteria. When mentoring young people with little experience, look for these qualities in them:
F – Faithful (They keep commitments when they make them)
A – Available (They have the time to meet with you)
I – Initiative (The aren’t waiting for something to happen, but go after it)
T – Teachable (They can learn from you)
H – Hungry (They are passionate about personal growth)
When selecting experienced leaders to train, look for these qualities:
G – Gifted (They have obvious gifts; perhaps even public gifts)
I – Influential (They have influence among the people they work with)
F – Fruitful (They bear fruit and get results when they work)
T – Trustworthy (They possess integrity and character)
S – Serving (They are already serving in some area before you ask them)
.

Marilyn it is so true that our time and our office space when organized are very benefical not only to ourselves but also to others.

Joseph I never realized how important protective privacy in one's office space is until I read this chapter especially those in youth ministry.

I agree with you Wayne. We need that privacy.

3-5 Apps for the church today
(sorry for the delay in posting. i made some changes to the computer and did not reconnect everything correctly and it took me a bit to figure out it was my problem and not at&t)
Pursue Clarity before Pursuing People.
When we have to fill the position of teacher, vbs director, or treasurer we mostly look to just fill the spot. I believe that it is important to be crystal clear about every job within the church. When you couple this with a good inventory of how people are gifted then you can be very thoughtful and deliberate in pursuing the right person for the job.
Be visible
In our world today we need to be visible to the dying world. Church should not be a country club or some other organization that you sign up or join. Our purpose should be clear to all so all will know what we are about.
Organization
It is important to take inventory of the facility and the use of the facility. So many times it seems as though the facilities that we use are not used to the best of their ability. I find it amazing that many times the nursery is not in a convient location to the sanctuary or the kindergarten sunday school class is above the senior adults sunday school class. How many times do the youth get the room that is worn out and in need of a major renovation. We need to organize our facilities to get the optimum use out of them.

I just went through a reorganization of my work area. I'll let you know in a couple of weeks if it helps any. My office is much like Chess' minus the 16 month old. I would much prefer to have a space that is not in the center of everything but if you have seen our small apartment there is nowhere that you aren't three steps from the center.

Joseph- good stuff. I think back to my experiences in youth ministry and realize most of my problems that I encountered were from my lack of organization.
Posted by: Philip Brown | January 21, 2009 at 01:03 PM
I don't think we can say enough about organization in our ministry. I have learned that without a system in place, I keep spending all my time either putting out fires or ironing out the same wrinkles over and over again. This leads to frustration which then leads to discouragement in general. Time wasted doing unimportant tasks could certainly be used for the advancement of God's kingdom.

3-5 apps for the church
Dream and dream big. We have a big God who can do big things. He is not limited by us and we should not attempt to limit Him.
Assign the best resources to ministry and not to problems.
Know the culture. If we do not know who we are ministering to then we really can't call ministry. Meeting needs where the people are (Het I did learn something in supervised ministry) is huge not trying to put a square peg in a round hole

joseph --- Vision, evaluate, purpose . I'm Glad you were able to find some relevant words from the text. I'm sure these will be all relevant to the times we are facing to be ablw to apply to current situations.
Posted by: John Young | January 28, 2009 at 11:21 AM
Phillip, I think you are right about the culture. We have to understand that not everyone will do church the same. Afterall, the emphasis is on Jesus rather than some preapproved format. Who is to say that we can't be effective for God in a skatepark or a rodeo? We will have to meet them where it becomes relevant to them! Good insight.
Posted by: Danny Reid | January 28, 2009 at 02:57 PM
John, you are right about the accountability group. One other great benefit about it is that you will find that the problems that you have are common to everyone. We are not in this alone, even though we often want to act like we are.
