I love communicating the content of scripture. There is nothing like being prayed up, studied up and having an opportunity to speak.
Faced some communication challenges this past weekend. First, was the architecture. The church moved from 2 services in a very traditional setting into the "gym." Architecture produces expectation so it felt a little like a school assembly at first. Of course they are used to it but it took me back a little.
Next, was the baptism at the beginning of the service with all the relational paparazzi and the passing of digital cameras to look at the pictures. It distracted me because I wanted to look.
Finally, it was the pastors last Sunday! His last baptism, his last goodbye. The emotional quotient was off the chart in the room.
I could have been more prepared by doing a little environmental exegesis. I should have called and asked questions. I could have arrived earlier and done some relational recon.
You never know what you are going to encounter when you leave your home court as a communicator. Learn as much about the situation as you can an lean on the constants of prayer, preparation, His power and people's need for a right relationship with God.
